Vision
Dodgy Clutch Theatre Company have worked from their base on Tyneside since 1982.

Over that time they have produced a body of work which covers three main areas:

Touring Theatre: Indoor, Outdoor and Street Theatre
Over the years in which DC have worked in the North East, the company have developed a deeply rooted and instantly recognisable style of visual story-telling theatre. The company works collaboratively to produce new work in a popular form of visual theatre which combines the diverse elements of dance, music, puppetry, performance and pyrotechnics.

The company has worked in areas in which theatre does not generally take place, working closely with young people in local communities whose peer groups and family members have often formed the nucleus of the initial audience members.

Spectacular Events
As DC Events the company produce large-scale, site-specific spectacular events.

Training and Education
Workshops are available in all aspects of the company' work from the practical - such as making puppetry, music, song-writing, story-telling, visual effects, banner making, lanterns, dance, movement, mime and performance - to the theoretical - exploring issues such as symbol, tension, focus, etc. Their work is always accompanied by a workshop which explores the themes, meaning, style and form of the piece.

It is inherent in their working policy that the special skills they develop are passed on and shared. Towards this end they run workshops in schools, colleges and with community groups.

"Throughout Africa and Asia the survival of wildife is threatened and this diminishes us as people," Virginia McKenna.

elephant

Ten performers from South Africa and the UK have combined to create this new show – a theatre of magic, dance, live music, elaborate body puppetry and large scale visual storytelling.

In this production the elephant is a metaphor for the themes of truth and freedom, captivity and democracy. In the story a boy betrays, for human greed, the animal that befriended him as a child.

Elephant has grown out of the desire to expand the scale and the themes of the earlier show An Elephant Called Slowly show and to work with performers from South Africa.

Ozzie Riley, Director of Dodgy Clutch, was inspired by the quality and commitment of the work he saw when visiting the Grahamstown Arts Festival South Africa, July 2002. This new show will drawn on the strength of the skills of the partners involved and allow for an exchange of experience.

Other Productions
Street of the Moon for the Stockton International Riverside Festival
The piece introduced the four themes of earth, air, fire and water.

Manticor Follies for the Manchester Year of Drama
The company built five new follies in the ground of Dunham Massey a stately home run by the National Trust. A new history of the house was also written, and the story and the follies were animated with daily performances and site-specific processional pieces.
